William Thomas (Tom) Ariss, age 88. Born May 24, 1936 in Akron, Ohio to John and Agatha (nee: Mooney) Ariss. Died October 4, 2024, in Lebanon, Ohio. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie (nee: O'Kelly) Ariss, his children, Patrick (Dana) Ariss of Liberty Township and Erin (Douglas) Hammon of Columbus, two brothers, Robert Ariss and James Ariss, six grandchildren, Amanda (Harold) Shearer, Meghan (Garret Schappacher) Ariss, Rachael (Brice) Cavanaugh, Dylan (Casey Liptak) Hammon, Hannah Hammon and Craig Hammon and four great-grandchildren, Finn, Miles, Elliot and Landon.
Tom's dedication to public service is second only to his love of family and friends. He began serving the people of Ohio in 1957, when he joined the Ohio State Highway Patrol, were he remained for 30 years, achieving the rank of Assistant Post Commander of the Lebanon Post. After retiring from the patrol, Tom served as an officer with the Springboro Police Department and as an instructor at the Scarlet Oaks Career Development Center, each from 1988 to 1992.
In 1992, Tom began his tenure as the Warren County Sheriff, where he served four terms, becoming the longest serving sheriff in the County. During his time as Sheriff, Tom served as the President of the Buckeye State Sheriff's Association in 2002. Following his service as sheriff, Tom continued to serve the county's residents through one term as a Warren County Commissioner.
Outside of his employment, Tom served as a board member of several public and private entities, including the Warren County Community Services Board, the Warren County Historical Society, and the Otterbein Lebanon SeniorLife Community.
Tom also served his country in both the United States Army and the Naval Reserves in the late 1950's and early 1960's.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 9, 2024 from 4:00 PM-7:00 PM at the Oswald-Hoskins Funeral Home, Lebanon. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, October 10, 2024 at 10:00 AM at St. Francis de Sales Church. Interment will follow in Lebanon Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations are being requested in Tom's name to Ohio Hospice of Dayton , St. Francis de Sales Church , or Warren County Community Services .
