EULOGY: Sue C. Hasty 01/23/1943 – 08/11/2024
On behalf of our family, thank you for coming:
My brother texted me the night after Mom's passing saying, "when you go to pick out stationary, attendance book, thank you cards, a casket or an urn, I want you to make your decisions with your heart and gut, not your head." He said, "This is about honoring your mother and don't let money get in the way of what will make you satisfied in your heart that you have done what she would like, but just as importantly what you will like." He said "Maybe more important because you have to live with it." He went on to tell me, "Believe it or not, you have brain cells in your heart, and if you don't believe it, then Google 'does my heart have brain cells?' (More on that later)
I want to tell you something that happened earlier this year, I think around April or May. I went over to Mom's house and she came out of her room, pushing her little buggy with a big grin on her face. She said to me, "I want to tell you something that happened to me the other day." I was curious and excited, "What?", I asked. She proceeded to tell me that she heard a voice from God. She said the voice that she heard was not in her head, nor was it her voice. She then told me, the voice was audible outside of her, spoken in her ear. And the voice said, "Sue, are you ready?" She stopped and replied out loud, "Yes, Lord, is that you?". That was it. Again, not her voice, not in her head, audible, and spoken in her ear, just like that. It gave me chills, and still gives me chills today. There are several ways God reveals himself to us. One of which is God speaks directly to us. Of course, there is one man in the Old Testament who experienced the holy privilege of having God speak to him directly. That man being Moses. God called out to him from a burning bush saying, "Moses! Moses!" And Moses answered, "Here I am!". And that's when God gave Moses the assignment of leading the children of Israel out of Egypt and into the Promised Land found in Exodus 3:1-17. I believe God spoke to Mom. Mom was a deeply spiritual person who became a born again Christian later in her life. She acknowledged and confessed her sin, and she expressed her belief in Jesus' death and resurrection, and she asked for forgiveness, and she invited Jesus to enter her life, declaring her faith in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. Romans 10:9-10, states "That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." Mom was filled with joy after hearing God's whisper in her ear. God has ways of speaking to us, and sometimes that's directly. In the last 24 hours of Mom's life, she posted 35 inspirational posts on social media. And the very last post seems fitting since Mom's death. Mom posted this before saying good night: "Riches I do not have, but laughter, peace, love and happiness I can freely share with you, and above all, I carry you in my prayers. To value a person in your life you do not have to see them daily, but somewhere, at some stage during the day you think of them, pray for them, motivate each other, and be reminded that we are bound together through the love of our Heavenly Father."
Sue was a good and faithful woman, who loved her family and friends unconditionally. Throughout her entire life, she was kind, thoughtful, generous, compassionate, faithful, courageous, smart, loyal, a truth seeker, forgiving, she had a positive attitude, and was a good listener and advisor. She was a child of God. But Mom wasn't perfect, and Mom made mistakes. But do you know what? We are not perfect, either. According to the Bible, God says that all people are sinners, and that sin is rebellion against God's goodness: Romans 3:23 says, "For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God."
The day following her death and up through today, our family has received calls and texts from friends and family outpouring their heartfelt love and respect for our mother. And you have blessed us beyond comprehension; and our hearts are filled with love and peace for our mother, and we are comforted by our Lord and Savior. Was she somehow preparing herself to leave us? We will never know. But what I do know, is our mother answered the call to be a good and faithful servant. Mom had a purpose and her mission was completed. I believe Mom's final wish for you today is to love generously, always have hope, be grateful for everything, and above all else, have faith in a loving God, that you, too, will be delivered. John 11:25-26 says, "He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die."
As we are here honoring the woman we love, and as we depart today; I ask you, what is your purpose? Learn the lessons of my mother and go live as she has lived. God is good. God is great.
Now; go do what my mom would do. Go to Google and type, 'does my heart have brain cells?'
