SPENCER, Dr. Stephen Greene, 59, of Lebanon passed away on Monday, April 7, 2025 at his home surrounded by his family. Born June 3, 1965 in Dayton, OH to Lester Greene and Cordia Ann (nee: Evans) Spencer. Dr. Stephen G. Spencer, Ph.D., Emeritus Professor of English, served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Shepherdstown University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia from 2022 to 2023. Prior to that, he was the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Executive Director of the Alabama Center for the Arts at Athens State University. At the University of Southern Indiana, Dr. Spencer was Professor of English, English Department Chair, and Enrollment Management Planning Coordinator. At Wilmington College of Ohio, he served in several positions: Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, Area Coordinator of Humanities and Modern Languages, English Department Chair, and Writing Across the Curriculum Director. In 2004, Dr. Spencer was a Senior Fulbright Scholar in American Studies at Universidad Complutense Madrid. He was also a talented and published poet.
An island boy at heart, after living in Hawaii and graduating from High School in Mililani, Stephen was never happier than when he was near the water. He loved the outdoors and was an avid mountain biker, longboarder, and kayaker. He also loved to travel and his family will be forever grateful for those experiences.
He is survived by his loving parents, his devoted wife of 35 years, Kelly (nee: Wilson) Spencer, his sons, Jackson Wade Spencer of Lebanon and Camden Grant Spencer of Lebanon, his two brothers, Bryan Keith (Teresa) Spencer of Denver, CO and L. Craig (Laura) Spencer of Maineville, OH and a host of extended family and friends.
A memorial reception will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2025 from 2-4 PM at the Oswald-Hoskins Funeral Home in Lebanon.
