Richard C.
Dunn
Apr 30, 1933 — May 14, 2024
Richard C. Dunn, 91, of Centerville, Ohio, passed away on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at Brookdale Assisted Living in Kettering. Richard was born on Sunday, April 30,1933 in Lebanon, Ohio, to Carleton and Mabel (nèe: St. John) Dunn. Richard was a graduate of Lebanon High School, class of 1951. After graduation, he joined the Army and was stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Upon receiving an honorable discharge, Richard enrolled with the University of Cincinnati, where he earned a degree in marketing and finance.
He worked as an analyst for the Department of Defense for 35 years, the last 19 at Wright Patterson AFB. When he retired from Civil Service, he took a job with CompuNet Labs as a driver. He would visit doctors' offices, clinics and hospitals, gather lab work, and deliver it to CompuNet for analysis. He got to know all of the roads within 60 miles of Dayton very well. And for many years, Richard prepared taxes for the Dunn and Taylor firm in Lebanon. He was very proud of the work he did helping others with their tax returns.
Richard, or "Dick" as he was known, had a great love of life. Having spent much of his childhood living in the country, he developed a love and respect for nature. His lifestyle reflected this as he was an early adopter of recycling and the use of products that were good for the environment. He was fascinated with all sorts of animals, and loved spending time landscaping his yard. As good a friend as he was to Mother Nature, he was an even greater friend to all he came in contact with. It didn't matter to him a man's position in life--Dick was a true friend to all who would receive his friendship.
Dick also loved sports. As a participant, he regularly played golf (in the spring and summer) and bowled (in the fall and winter). Many Friday nights would find him playing poker with friends. He kept a coffee mug filled with quarters for just such occasions. He also followed local college and professional teams: the UC Bearcats, UD Flyers, Cincinnati Bengals, Dayton Dragons, and his favorite, the Cincinnati Reds. Dick took his son, Jeff, to many games at Crosley Field and Riverfront Stadium. Jeff was able to repay his father by taking him to several games at the Reds' new stadium.
Richard and his wife of 66 years, Gloria (nèe Johns), liked to travel together. They frequented Las Vegas, where Dick would play the slots and Gloria would "people watch". They also loved visiting extended family and could be counted on to remember details of the lives of family and friends. They enjoyed passing down stories about their past with their children and grandchildren, hoping to keep these stories alive.
Preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers, William Dunn and Chester Dunn, and his sister, Doris Anthony, he is survived by his loving wife, Gloria; son, Jeff (Kathy) of Tulsa, Oklahoma; daughter Heidi Cox of Centerville, Ohio; seven grandchildren: Rebekah (Chris), Leah (Ty), Mark, Jeremy (Rachel), Ryan (Sarah), Meredith (Sean), and David II; and twelve great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2024 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Oswald-Hoskins Funeral Home in Lebanon.
