Obituary

Lyman Colt Peck, 101, of Monroe, passed away on Friday, August 12, 2022 at Mt. Pleasant in Monroe. Born on December 10, 1920 to Harley and Augusta (née: Campbell) Peck in Lebanon, OH.

Preceded in death by his wife, Virginia "Ginx" ( née: Williams) Peck, two brothers, Harley and John Peck and one sister, Katherine Kaufman. He is survived by his sister, Anne Olson, his daughters, Sarah (Barney) Wright of Lebanon and Mary (John) Snider of Manassas, VA, grandchildren Nathaniel "Nate" Wright of Mebane, NC, Elizabeth "Betsy" Whitt of La Junta, CO, Wesley Snider of Bristow, VA, five great- grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lyman was born in the family home in Lebanon in 1920 and grew up on a farm north of town where his father raised dahlias. He went to Yale, where his father had graduated, and finished his course work in 1942, enlisting before his graduation ceremony. He married his 4th grade sweetheart and they embarked on life together until she passed on in 2005. He was a fighter pilot during the war, was shot down on Leyte Island in the South Pacific, eluded capture and returned safely to US lines.

After the war he pursued additional education, gaining a PhD from Ohio State and becoming a Mathematics professor at several universities, including Ohio Wesleyan and finally, Miami U in Oxford. During his career he authored 4 Math textbooks and co-authored at least one more.
He was interested in stone rings and, with his wife, organized and led a tour of Stonehenge and other ancient rings found in the British Isles. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, the weather and the heavens. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church, serving as member of the choir and supporting his wife, who was the organist there for over 25 years.

He built an oven in his back yard in Oxford, which was heated by building a wood fire in it and then raking out the coals to let the heated structure bake the bread, which he sold, swapped or donated. He repeated this construction when he moved to his house at Mt Pleasant and continued making his weekly batches of 30 or so loaves for several years.

The family will receive friends and family on Wednesday, August 17, 2022 from 10:00 to 11:00 with a memorial service at 11:00, all in the Kettering Chapel at Ohio Living Mt. Pleasant, 225 Britton Lane Monroe, OH 45050. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Ohio Living Village Home Health and Hospice or Ohio Living Mt. Pleasant.
