Len "Butch"
Sholder
Sep 17, 1938 — Mar 6, 2023
A new star shines in the heavens, Leonard Paul Sholder, formerly of Lebanon, OH passed away on 6 March 2023 at Trinity Community of Beavercreek, his residence at the age of 84. He was known to friends and family as "Butch," while his coworkers would call him "Len." However you knew him, many people would simply call him a friend, father, pa, or husband and lifetime soulmate.
The son of the late James L. and Grace M. (Hafer) Sholder, he was born at his childhood home on Bottle Run Road in Lycoming County, PA on 17 September 1938.
Len graduated from Williamsport High School in 1956. He immediately entered into military service with the United States Navy. He served aboard the USS Wren as a gun fire control technician until his duty tour ended in 1959.
He met his future wife, Nancy Elizabeth Stabler, in the fall of 1959 on a blind date. They were married at the Salladasburg United Methodist Church and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on 2 June 2022.
Following his duty in the Navy, he worked for the National Cash Register [NCR] Company until his retirement in 2000. Throughout his career with NCR he held various positions as a: field service technician, technical instructor, curriculum developer, sales, network design specialist and vendor management. He retired with 41 years of service from NCR.
Len was ordained as a Ruling Elder in the First Presbyterian Church in Bellefonte, PA, in 1966 and also served as an elder at the Bellbrook and Lebanon Presbyterian Churches in Ohio. He was a current member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Springboro, OH.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was involved with youth as a counselor at Kirkmont Presbyterian Camp, Warren County 4-H advisor, Sunday School teacher at Bellbrook and Lebanon, Springboro Band Boosters and Miller's Blackhawks. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. If there was a John Wayne western on TV, he was watching it!! Reading was a favorite past time, enjoying historical fiction or true history.
Butch was a "putter" of the professional level, always finding something to keep himself busy. There was not much that he could not fix or wouldn't try to make it better. He enjoyed time with his grandchildren always sharing his special wit and "Butchisms" about life!!
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Kevin L. (Loa) Sholder of Dayton, Kent L. Sholder of Beavercreek and Timothy P. (Teri) Sholder of Centerville; seven grandchildren, Christian J. (Kaeley) Sholder, Cavanaugh S. Sholder, Annika B. Sholder, Blake E. (Katy) Bartley, Joel A. (Alyssa) Bartley, Chelsea K. (Kirk) Shoemaker, Andrew J. Karas; eight great-grandchildren, Parker, Leo, June, Kay, Ellie, Emmett, Finn and Emma.
He was predeceased by his only sister Lois M. Robinson in December, 2022.
A visitation will be held on Friday, 10 March 2023 from 5-7 PM, with the memorial service on Saturday, 11 March 2023, 11AM, both at the Covenant Presbyterian Church, Springboro, OH. Hoskins Funeral Home of Lebanon is serving the family.
