John Edward
Smith
Aug 30, 1952 — Jan 30, 2026
Lebanon
SMITH, John Edward, age 73, of Lebanon, passed away on Friday, January 30, 2026, at UC West Chester Hospital. John was born on August 30, 1952, in Charleston, West Virginia, to Edward and Ellen (née Stalnaker) Smith. He devoted more than 35 years of his life to 84 Lumber, where he served as a manager until his retirement in 2018. Following retirement, John found great joy and purpose participating in the Parkinson's Wellness
Group at the Countryside YMCA, where he valued both the exercise and the
friendships he made.
John was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Rebecca Smith.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Lisa (née Turley) Smith of Lebanon; his son, Jeff (Julia) Smith of Elida, OH; his daughter, Amanda (Chris) Gemperline of Monroe, OH; his brother, Jay Smith of Austin, TX; and his cherished grandchildren, Conner and Evan Smith, and Clara and Ellen Gemperline.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 5, 2026, from 10:00–11:00 AM, with a funeral service immediately following, all at Oswald-Hoskins Funeral Home in Lebanon.
John was an avid sports fan who especially loved WVU football, Xavier basketball, and
most of all, the Cincinnati Reds. Above everything, he loved his family. His grandchildren were the center of his world—Conner and Clara were his support people and the ones he loved talking to about everything. Ellen was his jigsaw puzzle buddy, and John was always excited to watch Evan play high school football and talk sports with him.
His favorite place to be was Holden Beach, North Carolina, where he enjoyed fishing, spending time in the surf, and making memories with his family. John was a
passionate history enthusiast, particularly interested in the Civil War and World War II.
He was a fan of White Mountain Jigsaw Puzzles, Sudoku and figuring out the day's
Wordle, usually with help from Lisa.
More than anything, John loved his family
and treasured every moment spent with his four grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation.
