Obituary

Janice Ann (Gischia) Kamps, 78, went to her heavenly home on May 14, 2024 after struggles with dementia. Born August 5, 1945 in Iron Mountain, MI to the late Carl and Eldora (Steeno) Gischia. Janice grew up in Niagara, WI and  graduated from Niagara High School in 1963.  In 1966, on a blind date in Oshkosh WI, she met the love of her life, Hilbert C. Kamps. They married January 7, 1967 and were married for 57 years.

Janice was born to work with numbers.  She joined Junior Achievement in high school and continued volunteering with JA well into her 70s.  Janice was successful in office management at Clairmont Trucking in Iron Mountain, MI, the Parking and Transit Department of Sheboygan, WI, and Sheboygan Area Lutheran High School.  While working full time and raising children, Janice fulfilled her dream of becoming a college graduate.  She graduated from Northcentral Technical College with an accounting degree and made the dean's list at Silver Lake College with a bachelor's in business.  Janice worked with Thrivent Financial Services,  Associated Bank, and Wells Fargo.

Throughout her career, Janice loved her most important roles of Mom and Nonna.  Janice and Hilbert were blessed with two daughters Lori (David) LaPorte and Eileen (Kevin) Turain.  She taught her daughters the lessons of faith, family, and forgiveness.  Janice loved and celebrated being Nonna (grandmother) to Madeline Turain, Danielle (James) LaPorte-Wise, Baxter Turain and Bennet (Ariel) LaPorte, and (great-grandmother) Violet and Lucas Wise.

Wherever Janice and Hilbert lived, be it Sheboygan, WI, LaCrescent, MN, or Eaton, Ohio, their home welcomed many travelers.  If you were fortunate enough to visit them, you were always welcomed with good meals and lively conversations around the dining room table. They would regale their guests with reminenscence of their many trips around the country and their favorite places; Rivara/Favria, Italy where they reconnected with family.  However at the heart of their home, God's love was the cornerstone. Janice loved being active in church activities from teaching vacation bible school, singing in the choir and helping with fund-raisers.

Our Nonna was a special woman who will be greatly missed.

Janice is survived by her husband, Hilbert, daughters, grand and great-grandchildren, sister Linda Rostagno, brother Tony (Linda) Gischia and brother Jim (Debbie) Gischia, brother in-law Jerry (Sally) Kamps, sisters in-law Elsie (Sandy) Sandelin, Ruth List, and Rita (Edward) van Sliedrecht, Lorraine Kamps, Joan Kamps, Sharon Kamps and Sue Kamps and many nieces and nephews.  She is preceded in death by her parents, sisters-in-law, brothers in-law, nieces, nephews and most recently, beloved niece Sarah Lange.
