James Frederick Matz

James Frederick Matz, 87, of Lebanon, passed away on Monday, May 25, 2026 at his residence. Jim was born on October 19, 1938 to Herzel and Freda (nee: Crawford) Matz in Frankfort, Ohio. Jim graduated from Chillicothe High School in 1956. He then earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from The Ohio State University where he played football and received three Varsity O letters. Later, he earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Wright State University. Jim had a career of 38 years working for General Motors in Dayton.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Rita (nee: Michael) Matz; two sons, Michael (Luba) Matz of Saginaw, MI, Thomas (Carmen) Matz of Monroe, OH, and his daughter, Suzanne (Shannon) Arnett of Grove City, OH; his grandchildren, Emily (Luke), Jenna (Ryan), Ryan, Alex, Maria, James, Francisco (Daniella); his great-granddaughter, Jane; many nieces and nephews; and wonderful friends. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, positivity, and love that lives on in all of us.

A memorial service to celebrate Jim’s life will be held on Friday, June 5, 11:00 with visitation from 10 - 11 a.m. at Resurrection Lutheran Church located at 1270 North Broadway, Lebanon, Ohio 45036. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Football Excellence Fund 314451 at The Ohio State University. Donations can be made securely over the phone by calling 614-292-2281.
