Howard Samuel Forrer, known to many as Sam, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2026, in Lebanon, Ohio, of natural causes. He was 86 years old, born on February 29, 1940, in Wellington, Kansas, a man whose life was defined by unwavering integrity, quiet dedication, and a deep commitment to those around him.
Sam’s formative years were shaped by the values of the Kansas heartland. He attended Kansas State University, where he distinguished himself as student body president and as a proud member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and the men’s glee club. Following his education, he served his country as a second lieutenant in the United States Army, an experience that deepened his sense of duty and discipline.
Upon returning to civilian life, Sam built a distinguished career in banking, rising to serve as President of Grant County Bank. His leadership was marked by the same qualities that defined him personally: high character, meticulous attention to detail, and an abiding commitment to doing what was right. His belief in ethical business practices found lasting expression in his endowment of a chair for Ethics in Business at Kansas State University, ensuring that future generations of leaders would be grounded in the principles he held dear.
Sam was deeply invested in his community, serving as a dedicated Rotarian and a proud member of the American Legion. Yet his truest joys were found closer to home. He was a gifted woodworker who crafted beautiful furniture by hand, pieces now cherished as family heirlooms. He loved riding his motorcycle with his beloved wife, Karen, exploring the backroads of the Midwest together. On quieter days, he could be found mowing the grass on his riding lawn mower or in the company of his faithful dogs, Taffy, Annie, and Gizmo.
Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Karen Lou Forrer, and his sister, Virginia Jacobson. He is survived by his daughter, Le Anne Conway(Dave); his son, Christian Forrer(Kristy);his sister, Sonya Noyes, his 6 grandchildren, Megan Lipsey(James), Hana Herron(Sean), Nathan Conway(Mat),Carleigh Kane(Zach), Kennady Forrer, Chase Forrer and 10 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 26, 2026 from 1:30 until 2:00 PM with funeral service to follow at 2 PM, all at the Oswald-Hoskins Funeral Home, Lebanon. Private burial will be held at a later date. Memorials are requested to either the Warren County Human Society or to Hospice of Cincinnati.
