Gardner "Jum" Phelps Horst, 90, of Lebanon, Ohio, passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at Traditions of Lebanon. Born on September 2, 1933, to Carl and Lucille (nee: Gardner) Horst in Philadelphia, PA. Jum was a graduate of Stow High School, Penn State University, and served in the United States Navy.
Preceded in death by his parents, sister Gretchen Bartlett, and grandchild Natalie Sieb, he is survived by his wife Carol (nee: Hampton) Horst, sons Derek (Jennifer Murphy) Horst, Ted (Cathy Porter) Horst, Joe (Karina) Horst, and Dan (Lori) Horst, step-daughters, Nancy (Michael) Andrews, and Rebecca Dunn, step-son Patrick Miller, eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Jum was an architectural engineer with a passion for building some of the tallest concrete buildings in the U.S. and was the project superintendent over the construction of what was originally the Cincinnati Bell Tower, the Houston Commerce Tower, the Columbia Center in Seattle, and the Waldorf Grand Wailea Resort in Maui. Jum's greatest legacy is the relationship he had with people, including the reunion with his high school sweetheart who became the love of his life, raising kind and productive children, having fun with his grandchildren, and mentoring a generation of construction managers.
A memorial service will be held Friday, June 14, 2024, 10:30 a.m., at St. Patrick's Episcopal Church. The Reverend Jackie Matisse will officiate for family members and close friends. Inurnment to follow at Lebanon Cemetery for family members only.
Donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or a charity of your choice. Arrangements by the Oswald-Hoskins Funeral Home, Lebanon.
