Obituary

Douglas Wayne McDaniel, 61 of Lebanon Ohio passed away unexpectedly on August 14, 2023. Doug was born on July 2, 1962 to Janet McDaniel and Robert F. McDaniel. Doug is preceded in death by his mother and father. Doug is survived by his wife Kristina Winner and his 4 siblings:Penny McKay (Mark), Patricia Brooks, Paula Tanner (Tom), and Andy McDaniel (Barb). He has 6 nieces and nephews: Cindy Maxwell, Lisa English (Ed), Michael T. Shaver (Cindy), Dena Lane (Brett). Courtney Tanner, and Erika Glover (Jess). He also had great nieces and nephews. Doug and his wife Kristie were married April 25, 2014 in Negril, Jamaica which is still very near and dear to their hearts.

Doug spent some of his younger years in Puebla Mexico (1970-1974) where he lived with his parents and his sister Paula and brother Andy. He has fond memories of Mexico where he had to learn Spanish and continued to speak fluently all his life. He and his mother came back to Lebanon when Doug's father unexpectedly passed away in 1974. He went to Lebanon for the rest of his schooling and graduated from Lebanon High School in 1980. He then studied corrections/law enforcement at Eastern Kentucky University and graduated with his Bachelors degree. He was part of the Sigma Chi fraternity at Eastern Kentucky where he made a lot of close friends who he considered brothers.

He worked a security job at Kings Island while he was in school. He worked for the State of Ohio Correctional Facility where he spent 30 years working as a corrections officer, chemical dependency counselor, and eventually Recovery Services Supervisor. He started at Lebanon Correctional Institution and eventually moved over to Warren Correctional Facility where he spent the last 15 years of his career. Doug worked on his Masters Degree while working for the state and graduated with a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice from Xavier. He also worked 3 days a week for Warren County Mental Health (Solutions) doing IOP groups for many years while working for the State. This is where he met his wife Kristie who was also working there as a counselor. Doug retired from the State of Ohio Corrections in 2014 and was enjoying his retirement. Doug eventually picked up some part time work at Adessa driving cars, Shaker Golf Course where he proudly worked alongside his brother Andy, and more recently Carlisle Pharmacy. Doug was a very active person and liked to stay busy even in retirement.

In Doug's early years at Lebanon Jr. High and High School Doug participated in multiple sports. He played basketball, soccer, ran cross country and track. He also loved to play golf and bowled on a league for a number of years with some of his Lebanon high school friends. He was still an active golfer. Doug loved all sports but specifically loved basketball and watching the University of Xavier Musketeers. Doug coached basketball at Berry Jr. High from 1986-1989. Doug loved to garden and had a green thumb. He had a love for hot peppers that he proudly grew himself and started making habanero hot sauce which eventually turned into a small business. His peppers were "our children" as he would often call them. Doug loved to travel and learning about the culture, language, food, and history. Doug and his wife Kristie spent the last 9 years travelling to Jamaica and Key West Florida which was near and dear to their hearts.

Doug was a lively personality. His laugh was contagious. He was a very happy person and liked to stay focused on the positive. He did not know a stranger and would literally talk to everyone. He loved his wife, family and close friends. These were the most important things to him. Doug was an extremely caring and generous person and often found purpose in helping others that were in need.

Doug was a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church and went on a few mission trips with the church to Nicaragua to assist with various projects including helping to build a school. He was a hard worker and knew working hard would help him be successful in his life and he was.
