Robert Woodrow Behme
(July 16, 1918 - May 3, 2012)

U.S. Veteran Robert W. Behme, 93, of Otterbein-Lebanon Senior Lifestyle Community, OH and formerly of Oakwood, OH, passed away early May 3rd, 2012 at Atrium Medical Center in Middletown, OH. He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 54 years, Alice (Scott) Behme in 2001, parents Arthur and Dove (Wade) Behme, brother Kenneth, and half brother Albert. He is survived by his three children; Linda (Richard) Dillon of Murfreesboro, TN, Steven (Diana) Behme, and Philip and Nancy Behme, all of Kettering, OH. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, sisters-in-law Leota Russell of Otterbein and Edwina Matthews of Dayton, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Charles and Kate Scott of Dayton, and several nieces and nephews. Robert was born July 16, 1918 in Dayton, OH and he attended and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1936. After graduation he was employed at the National Cash Register Company as an apprentice and journeyman toolmaker, and later as a process engineer. In early WWII, he and many others at NCR worked on the German Navy submarine code breaking efforts. In 1943 Robert entered the Naval Aviation V-5 program where he was honorably discharged in early 1946 having served in both the Atlantic and Asiatic theaters. He returned to NCR where he remained until his retirement in 1975. After 39 years at NCR, he worked for the Oakwood City Schools mainly as a van driver for students wanting to attend more vocationally aimed programs offered at Kettering and Centerville Schools. Robert was a 70+ year member of Stillwater Lodge #616 F & AM and served as its Worshipful Master in 1955. Robert was also a 70+ member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Dayton, OH. He was also a charter member of Millennium Lodge #779 F & AM following the consolidation of several lodges. Robert was active with the choir at Oakwood Methodist Church and later Otterbein-Lebanon United Methodist Church. Visitation Monday, May 7th, 10-10:30 AM, with memorial service immediately following, all at Otterbein-Lebanon United Methodist Church. Private burial will take place in Otterbein-Lebanon Cemetery.
